Overview

Flink Learning is a web site subscription with 3,000 learning activities for children in Grades K-5. I want to convert Flink Learning into a mobile device App.

Project Description

Short Summary

Flink Learning is a web site subscription with 3,000 online learning activities for children in Grades K-5. The activities cover a broad range of subjects:  Reading, Phonics, Math, Spelling, Writing, Science and Social Studies. And the learning activities reflect a broad range of activity types, from e-Books to interactive worksheets, from instructional games to story-writing projects. And all the activities involve a group of big-headed, purple people characters:  the Flinksters.

But the world is going mobile and the Flinksters don’t want to be left out. My project is to convert Flink Learning and all of its thousands of learning activities to a series of mobile device apps. There will be a free app—usually referred to in today’s parlance as a “freemium” app—with ten to fifteen free activities, representing all the grade levels and the two most important subject areas:  Reading and Math. Parents, teachers and even children will be able to purchase additional apps using in-app purchasing.

I have been creating educational software since 1980, including the best-selling Bank Street Writer. I have built the Flink Learning web site, it’s 3,000 activities and authoring tool for parents and teachers. I was a high school exchange student in Norway and wrote the book: I Was a Teenage Norwegian.

What We Need & What You Get

This project leverages a great deal of past experience and actual assets. I have been developing educational software for over thirty years. All 2,000 learning activities that are a part of this project have already been authored. We need $12,000 to build a mobile device engine (in HTML5) that will run the existing activities without modification, except for graphics that are appropriate for mobile devices. When we are done, Flink Learning Mobile will have more learning activities and apps for young children than anyone else. And they will be both engaging and educational, not just entertaining.

The project is great, but so are the rewards, which include:

  • Subscriptions to the existing Flink Learning web site
  • Grade-level Math apps
  • Complete grade-level apps
  • Framed pictures of the Flinksters
  • iPads preloaded with K-5 grade-level apps

The Impact

And there will be HUNDREDS of learning apps from which to choose. There will be Reading apps, with an e-Book surrounded by comprehension, vocabulary, spelling and sentence-building activities, for just $.99…less than most e-Book alone apps. There will be Phonics apps built around a Phonics topic such as Grade 1 Letters and Sounds with ten to twenty activities for $1.99. There will be Math apps built around Math topics such as Grade 2 Addition with twenty or more activities for $2.99. There will be Spelling apps for an entire year’s worth of sixty-seventy weekly Spelling activities for $4.99.

And the activities themselves will be exactly as they are in the online version. There will be graphically appealing e-Books that are read to the children. Animated multiple choice question games with comprehension questions about the e-Books they have just read. Animated click-and-drag games where children have to spell words they hear or whose definitions they see. Interactive worksheets where children have to match pictures to their beginning letters. Concentration matching puzzle games where children have to match numbers to math problems. And all activities include the unusual Flinksters.

I have already created over 3,000 online learning activities. I have already created a successful iPhone/iPad app:  Wordsizzler Spelling Grde 1-5. Flink Learning Goes Mobile is the logical extension of these two existing products, building on their assets and my experience.
