First Ice Cream Sandwich Tablet Launched In China

The world’s first Ice Cream Sandwich tablet has been unveiled but only our Chinese friends have access to it as of the moment.

This new tablet we’re talking about is the Ainovo-branded NOVO7 tablet. It is built by MIPS Technologies and Ingenic Semiconductor.

And yes, the new NOVO7 runs on Android 4.0 or more popularly known as Android Ice Cream Sandwich. It will also retail for less than $100, a press release from MIPS says.

To retail it at less than $100 seems kind of fishy, in my opinion. Fishy in the sense that could the NOVO 7 really be good for such a price? Nonetheless, the new tablet’s features seem to be decent.

According to MIPS, the new tablet is “powered by Ingenic’s JZ4770 mobile applications processor, which leverages a MIPS-BasedTM XBurstTM CPU running at 1GHz.” This processor is single-core, however.

It also features a 7-inch multi-touch capacitive screen, 4GB in internal memory, and front and back cameras. The NOVO7 is reported to be able to capture 1080p video and it also features 3D graphics with the Vivante GC860 GPU. No detail was shared about the resolution of the screen or how much RAM the NOVO7 is packing.

As for connectivity, the new Ice Cream Sandwich tablet has support for Wi-Fi b/g/n, an HDMI port and a USB 2.0 port. It also has a microSD slot for those who may want to give the device more storage. Battery life is expected to be up to 7 hours.

Andy Rubin, Google’s SVP of mobile, said in a statement that he is “thrilled to see the entrance of MIPS-Based Android 4.0 tablets into the market. Low cost, high performance tablets are a big win for mobile consumers and a strong illustration of how Android’s openness drives innovation and competition for the benefit of consumers around the world.”

According to MIPS, 8- and 9-inch form factors of the new tablet will also soon be launched. Those in China can get the new NOVO7 Ice Cream Sandwich tablet from Ainol Electronics Co.

The new tablet will be branded under Leader International Inc and OMG Electronics LTD, among others, as it will be made “available in the United States and other geographies within the next several months,” MIPS said in its press release.
