Review: Zombie Gunship for iOS

I was gazing at my iPod Touch 4th gen. and noticed that I haven’t been using it for games for quite a while now and I was like, “Damn! I might be getting old.” I stumbled upon Zombie Gunship while browsing for zombie games to cure the itch of wanting to wack someone. This app from Limbic Software is a zombie-killing game but instead of being on land and throwing or bashing zombies away, you’re thousands of feet up in the air in an AC-130 gunship and you use the air power to protect a bunker that happens to be the human race’s last stronghold.

The game is simple and the controls are easy to learn. You select your weapon from three options on the upper right, swipe on the screen to lock on the zombies, then blow them away using the ‘fire’ button on the lower left. But you should be careful not to kill the survivors trying to get to the bunker during the crossfire or it’s game over. The graphics is awesome as it simulates the weapons screen on board of an AC-130.

As you progress through the game you get ‘coins’ with an amount corresponding to the number of zombies you killed. Those credits can be used to unlock weapons and purchase upgrades. The further you upgrade, the more expensive it becomes, so you have to kill more zombies if you want to get the maximum firepower.

There’s an in-app purchase of coins if you want to quickly upgrade your weapons to the maximum level. I was able to max out my gunship without purchasing any coins so I can brag a little.

For the game play, as you last longer in the game, more zombies come out and it’s starting to look like a crowd of Justin Bieber fans on their way for the launch of the new Bieber Underwear. You know what they say, the more the merrier so I bring out my 105 mm Howitzer and blast them away. And by the way, they have a hulk zombie.

I was able to play a full week before I was able to max out my gunship and from there it starts to get a bit boring. You get to last longer in the game but it’ll feel repetitive in the end. Adding a good story line and a boss stage would make it more exciting and interesting.

Zombie Gunship by Limbic Software is available in Appstore for $0.99 and it will surely get you back in zombie killing business.
