Early Bird Review – The Early Bird Catches The Worm

The phrase above might be familiar to some of you. While it is not related to the core game play of “Early Bird” by Booyah, it might be one of the inspirations for both the title and characters. This game didn’t catch my attention in the first sight, as I thought this would be just another cartoonish puzzle game. But after I read more comments about it, I decided to check it out anyway. And surprisingly, this game has something that made me to keep playing. Your task is to help the little bird to reach its favorite food, the worm. The control is considerably simple. What you need to do is to swipe to make the birdy jump while flapping its wings (yes, it still can’t fly properly). You have to properly land it on top of the hit mark, where the worm lives, using a limited number of swipes in each level.

There are currently 3 different worlds, each with gorgeous landscape. As you progress, more objects will appear, such as fans, springs, spikes, and etc . Some of them might help you, while others might just be another obstacles for you. At the end of the level, just like other puzzle games with 3-star scoring system, your score will be computed to determine how many stars you will get, based on some factors, such as time taken, how many bugs were eaten, as well as number of swipes used.  There are also additional points for performing “Super” jump, which is usually triggered if you jump really high and then land properly.

One thing that really pissed me off sometimes while playing this, is the swipe control. Unlike other swipe based games where the path hint is clear and informative, this one has somewhat randomly drawn line without actually giving you enough information of how the birdy will move. You need to get yourself used to it. You are actually able to perform multiple jump too, so certainly momentum plays important role here. Anyway, for the arts and music, it is quite decent and cute though. Some levels are really challenging, and it might force you to keep replaying it to get all the 3 stars. For anyone who is in-search of a new cute physics puzzle game, you got to try this one.
